Hello and welcome to Class 1. Print E-mail

We'd like to introduce ourselves to you as a very friendly and hard working group of 26 Year 1 pupils. Some of us have older brothers and sisters at this school and some of us have only recently moved to the area.

We are lucky enough to have two teachers - Mrs Dawson and Mrs McHugh who are supported during the course of the week by Mrs Pearson, Mrs Hallatt and Mrs Brookes. All the staff who work with us are kind, caring and helpful which is probably why we enjoy school so much.

If you came to visit our classroom you would find it is a very busy place where we learn through first hand experience, investigation, role play and in collaboration with others. You might see us sat in a group working with an adult at a table or creating something on the carpet with our friends, either way you can be sure we will be trying our best and having fun.

Hello and welcome to Class 2. We are a class of 23 Year 1 children. Our teacher is called Miss. Cowles and this is her second year at Cookridge Primary School. She really likes dancing and often starts the day with a song and a dance to wake us all up so we are ready for learning. Miss Cowles also likes computers. She is good at ICT and sometimes has to help the other teachers when their computers don’t work properly!

Mrs. Brookes works in Class 2 as well. She works with us in small groups to help us with our learning. She also spends time reading with us individually which really helps us to improve our reading skills. Mrs. Brookes teaches us on a Wednesday afternoon when Miss. Cowles has her planning time. We like doing creative activities with her. Mrs. Harrowsmith teaches us on Thursday afternoons too.

In Class 2, we enjoy using the different areas in our classroom which help us with our learning. We particularly love using the role play area which may be a scientist’s lab, a construction site or an old fashioned school room. We have a creative area where we can cut, stick, paint, and make things with play-dough. We also have a reading and a writing area to allow us to practice our literacy skills. We like to use the number area to count, measure and practice adding and subtracting. And finally, our construction area, which is always full of children building various models with the lego.

We like doing group work with her because she makes us laugh!Mrs. Hawkins teaches us art on Wednesday afternoons when Mrs. Robinson has her planning time. She has lots of good ideas and tells great stories too!Mrs. Shakespeare works with us during the week, helping with reading and supporting children who are learning to speak and understand English.Mrs. Tooze helps us with our work, likes telling stories and listens really hard in ICT lessons where she tries really hard to learn new skills – it’s not her favourite subject!Mrs. Harrowsmith is in Class 4 on Thursday mornings. She teaches us RE, PE and the shape, space and measures part of our maths work.

We love Big Writing and we like to have visitors in our classroom... please come and see our work!

Class 9 Print E-mail

Life in Class 9 is always busy, interesting and never dull!!

With the class teacher, Mrs Thorpe, and teaching assistant Mrs Horsley, organising things, there is always something happening.

Everyone thinks Year 6 means SAT's. Well, it does, but that's only part of what we are about. Preparing our children for high school next year is always on our minds, and to help with this, children in Year 6 have all sorts of different jobs and responsibilities round school to help them develop as confident and independent people who can think and act for themselves. These jobs range from helping with dinners, looking after the younger children at break-times, being a "reading buddy" to a younger child, showing visitors round school, organising and looking after the school library, amongst many other things.

Our current year of Humanities, with the focus title "In Pursuit of Peace" has meant we have been on several visits already and also had people in to talk to us. We have studied the geography and history of the local area, designed new buildings for the old Ralph Thoresby site, had a visit from a council planning officer, and been on a visit to Beeston to study another area of Leeds, as well as working collaboratively with a Year 6 class at Beeston Primary. We have many more activities planned, including taking the whole of Key Stage 2 to Eden Camp as part of our studies of World War 2.

In Year 6 there is also the exciting and action-packed five day residential trip to Buckden in North Yorkshire, when the children have opportunities to climb, walk, go caving and take part in problem solving activities to develop their thinking skills. The children start the week feeling nervous and excited, not sure if they are up to it, and come home feeling confident and rightly proud of themselves, having done things they never thought they would be capable of. This will be taking place in January 2010 this year, as well as out annual trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament.

So, as you can see, life in Year 6 is something to look forward to. Are you up to the challenge?
